Getting Complete Treatment With A Partial Hysterectomy

Partial hysterectomy is one of the types of hysterectomy that can be performed on a patient. With partial hysterectomy, only the uterus is removed. It is usually performed in order to treat fibroids and excessive bleeding. Unlike other types of hysterectomy, a partial hysterectomy requires a shorter recovery period.

A partial hysterectomy can be performed either through the vagina or the abdomen.

Abdominal partial hysterectomy. The abdominal technique is the more commonly used technique for this type of hysterectomy. An incision is made on the abdomen and then the uterus is detached from blood supply and the ligaments. One advantage to this technique is that the surgeon can clearly see the insides of the abdomen and has more space to work on. However, this technique results in a longer recovery period, more pain and discomfort, and a noticeable scar.

Vaginal partial hysterectomy. A partial hysterectomy performed through the vagina calls for a shorter recovery period, and the scar is not readily visible. However, it’s not possible to remove large fibroids with this technique. In addition, the surgeon would need to use instruments such as a laparoscope in order to see inside the abdomen during the surgery. Both techniques require the use of anesthesia, whether general or local.

Although the ovaries do not have to be removed, this procedure still renders a woman barren. The woman can also experience hormonal changes. Other possible after-effects include urinary problems, weight gain, osteoporosis, headaches, headaches, irritability, hot flashes, and reduced sexual activity. Some of the risks that come with the surgery include infections, injury to the pelvic organs, adhesions, hemorrhage, and complications from the anesthesia.

A partial hysterectomy takes one to two hours, but will require some hospital stay for the patient. Even after the patient gets released, it will take some six to eight weeks before normal activity can be resumed.
